Oral and Systemic Health: The Connection Between Periodontal Disease, Cardiovascular Disease and Diabetes

Duration: 3-4 hours

The documented associations among oral health and systemic diseases demonstrates the need for dental professionals to become more knowledgeable about the prevention, pathogenesis, and standards of care for treatment of systemic, as well as oral diseases. This course translates the latest scientific evidence into practical client-based therapy that will not only help reduce the burden of periodontal disease, but will contribute to reducing the high rates of morbidity and mortality associated with chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases and diabetes.

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss the connection between periodontitis, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes.
  • Describe the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis.
  • List the inflammatory mediators implicated in gingival inflammation.
  • Discuss management and prevention strategies in controlling and eliminating oral inflammation.
  • Understand the role of bacterial biofilms, and the role of inflammation in periodontitis and chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
  • Discuss how periodontal infections contribute to elevated CRP levels.
  • Discuss how periodontal infections contribute to insulin resistance.
  • Understand the importance of effective elimination of subgingival infection through a combined treatment approach using mechanical debridement and locally delivered antimicrobials as adjunctive therapy to improve treatment results.
  • Describe the multidisciplinary team approach in the management of the diabetic client.
  • Discuss the importance of assessing systemic parameters in high-risk clients, and including referral as a part of comprehensive care.
  • Describe how tobacco use and poor dietary patterns can affect oral and systemic health.
  • Identify risk factors for periodontal disease and determine implications for specific treatment of periodontal infections as they apply to clients with, and at high risk for cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
